Flying Dragon Qigong: Discovering the Three Treasures

Begins Sept 13, 2010

Description and Goals

Discovering the Three Treasures (Shen, Qi, Jing) is Saskatoon Xin Fu Gompa’s foundation course in qigong.  The first purpose of the course is to establish a firm awareness of your ability to feel the sensations called Qi, or internal energy.  This sensation is a composite of increased blood flow, increased sensitivity of the nervous system, reduced physical, mental and emotional strain, improved concentration, better focused intent, heightened awareness, and enhanced visualization skills.

The second goal of the course is to establish a firm knowledge of Daoist energy anatomy including several acupuncture points used as gates to enter the body, the three energy cauldrons and the Thrusting Channel along which they lie, and the main circular route (Ren Mai and Du Mai meridians) used in later stages of Flying Dragon Qigong.

The third goal of the course is to introduce the mind-body-spirit paradigm and key Daoist philosophical concepts that form the basic theoretical structure of these arts.  Students will be exposed to the ideas of Wu Ho (Not Too Much Fire), Wu Wei (Natural and Spontaneous Harmony), the Four Virtues, Xin (Attitude), Yi (Intention), Sung (Release of Tension), balance, types of Qi, Allostatic load, and the Three Harms.

The fourth goal of the course is to learn to visualize and concentrate the intent.
Students will develop a tranquil mind by Quiet Sitting, harness emotional turmoil and improve energy levels via diaphragmatic breathing, improve posture and efficiency while sitting, standing and walking, and develop an understanding of Sung to release tension in the body.  The curriculum encompasses seated techniques, Post-Natal Breathing, exercises that massage the internal organs, stretch the meridians, and enhance lymphatic fluid flow, five Standing Meditation (Zhan Zhuang) postures, an Emei Clearing exercise, and the fundamentals of Circle Walking.

Prerequisites

The course is open to those 16 years of age and up.

Course Mechanics

The course is held over eight sequential classes, each building on the material of the previous class.  Students are introduced to general qigong theory and will learn Quiet Sitting, Dao-Yin exercises, Standing Meditation, and Circle Walking Meditation.

The course is available twice every year in September and January.
